For Davis Travel Centers, which operates three locations in Virginia, community ties run deep. Every year, the staff and owners support a number of causes to benefit the local hospitals and schools.

The company has thrown its support VCU Massey Cancer Center, and has held an annual VCU Massey Cancer drive where all of the company’s profit centers sell $1, $5, $10 and $20 tickets. No matter what amount is raised, Mel and Rex Davis will match the funds. Over the last three years Davis Travel Centers has donated $50,831 to the center.

The company provides grants to schools in the three counties where they have operations and support after-prom parties and sporting events.

"Each year we are able to give a $500 grant through ExxonMobil for the project of our choice. As a company we match this donation, so total funds for the school are $1,000,” said Rhonda Rook, assistant operations manager for the company. “We have been doing these grants since 2005, each year picking a different school to share the wealth.”

In Sussex County, the company also sponsors football and basketball games by putting on half time shows and giving away $25 gift cards to the participants who can make a field goal or free throw. “Each participant also gets a $10 gift card whether they make the goal or not,” Rook said.

Davis Travel Centers also provides platters of subs for sports programs, gives away free meals at their restaurants for students making the honor roll and participates with the elementary schools in the Dr. Suess reading day.

During The NATSO Show, NATSO Chairman Tom Heinz called on all NATSO members to share the many stories of the good they do within their communities. “Let’s all take it upon ourselves to work to change that by spreading the word about all that we do,” Heinz said. “Share your stories with the local media, send a press release to the trade press and communicate your news with NATSO.”
